The West Gate of Winchester. West Gate, Winton.
G. F. Prosser. 1856.
Tinted lithograph printed in black, blue and yellow. Printed area 425 x 340mm. Neatly repaired tears to the margins and one that extends into the printed surface which is hardly visible.
The Royal Standard flies on top of the Gate: as Queen Victoria laid the foundation stone to the Royal Victoria Hospital in nearby Southampton in 1856 she may well have visited Winchester on the same tour.
This is an extremely rare and fine example of tinted lithography: the buildings shown through the arch of the Gate are untinted, which makes the view three dimensional.
