A pair of scenes from Oliver Goldsmith's The Deserted Village, written in 1770 to condemn rural depopulation and the pursuit of excessive wealth.
John Keyse Sherwin was a well-known and accomplished engraver. A pupil of Bartolozzi. According to Bryan's Dictionary of Painters and Engravers 'he fell into poverty, and died at a tavern which formerly stood where Swallow Street joins Oxford Street in London' (now Oxford Circus).
