William Daniell's
Voyage Round Great Britain

A collection of fine aquatints in original colour, published in Daniell's monumental eight-volume 'A Voyage Round Great Britain', published by Daniell & Longmans between 1814 and 1824.

William Daniell

William Daniell (1769–1837), son of a Kingston bricklayer and inn owner, became an apprentice to his uncle Thomas Daniell, a well-known landscape painter, in 1779.  The pair travelled to India in 1784, where William helped Thomas with his topographical sketches. On their return to England in 1794 William learned the technique of etching with aquatint, a task he told Joseph Farington took seven years working from 6 in the morning to midnight to perfect. Their Oriental Scenery, with 144 aquatints, was published 1795-1808.

Having learned his art William then set about another huge project, recording the landscapes of the coasts of England Wales and Scotland. Originally he intended to travel by sea, but this was shown not to be practical. Instead he travelled overland, splitting the task into six summer expeditions over ten years, working clockwise, starting from Land's End in 1813.  It was 1823 before he arrived back at Land's End.

Working on the copper plates took up the winter months. In his etching Daniell was a purist: many aquatinters would add lines to the etched tones of the medium, but William would not compromise, even creating the rigging of ships from the dots of aquatint.

By 1824 he had completed the 308 plates of the series and moved onto other projects. Although he continued working until his death, it is for this series that he is best known. In 1962 306 of the plates were rediscovered after being lost for a century and are now in the possession of the Tate Gallery.

The plates are listed in the order they appear in the series
