Notice how the lines in the background are just as black as those in the foreground, which makes perspective difficult with wood engraving.  The lettering was done by typeset, let into the wood block.  There is also typeset on the back of the print, which shows through the paper.
At the time, Ulm was, of course, a major centre of printing.
