South East View of Bridge-North in Shropshire. |
About the year 2000 Roger and I bought a Paul Sandby aquatint of Eton. We were not sure if it came from the set of Windsor aquatints, so we tried to find a catalogue raisonné of his printed work and were surprised to find there wasn't one. Having always liked Sandby's work I decided to start compiling one, researching collections like that of the British Museum. Over a decade later I am atill far from finishing, as I have discovered how prolific an artist he was. |

Focusing my attention on Sandby's prints meant that I noticed more and more for sale and soon I found myself with a collection. Although it is by no means complete (I don't have the full sets of the Views in Wales or the Windsor series) it shows the versatility of Sandby as a topographical artist, breathing fresh life into landscape painting, and also his ability as a printmaker, a field he revolutionised with his advances in aquatint. |

PAST EXHIBITIONS OF THE COLLECTION The collection has also been adapted into an exhibition, with nearly 100 framed prints and some books illustrated by Sandby. An integral section of the exhibition is a display of copper printing plates, both etching and aquatint (regrettably none by Sandby himself), explaining how these intricate prints were made.
